**First of all Goth is a subculture. For all of you who don't know whar subculture is here's definition (for you who know skip next paragraph)
Subculture - the cultural values and behavioral patterns distinctive of a particular group in a society. It's group having social, economic, ethnic or other traits distinctive enough to distinguish it from others within the same culture or society.
I won't write about history of Goths cuz you can all find all you need to know about it on internet.
You all must understand That Goth is NOT a phase. Goth is state of being. One does not become Goth, one finds out they are. As we all know Goths started out with music but through years it became more than that.
Second thing is: not everyone can be Goth. There are certain pre-requisities for being a Goth
Intellectual, interested in learning (you don't have to be genious)
Appreciaton of darkness and morbid things
Artistis ability or creativity
There are many people who fit this. However they avoid calling themselves Goths mainly so they won't be associated with same label as kids with bad make-up.
GOTH IS NOT IDENTITY. it's only a word to describe some aspect of certain individual. One remains individual inside a subculture. If one is Goth it doesn't mean he/she is like everyone else. It's the individual that define subculture, it's not subculture that defines individual. You can all imagine it as a club. People can identify with others with similar interests. There is NO dress code, though many of us like to wear black. One is NOT Goth for liking certain type of music.
On the other side of respect for people's space there is disrespect towards people who just want to be trendy. That can explain tensiones between "Goth wannabes" and "real Goths". The "real Goth" belives in "Goth" as a genuine lifestyle. The wannabes just concideres it's cool to dress in attempt to intimidate. They don't have respect for individuality, they just want to be part of "weird, sceary group". The wannabes express their individuality by belonging to a group, while Goth belong to a group by expressing their individuality. For a Goth first comes the state of mind and than the dress code. For wannabes dress code comes first. Wannabes have desire to remain part of mainstream because they fear the reaction of "society". Goths however don't give a crap what "society" thinks or does - as long as they are left alone.
I hope this will help someone understand what Goths are and I hope it will destroy prejudices about them.**
